Girls' crew competes in Virginia state finals

The junior four consisting of Rachel Marsh '21, Arabella Dixon '21, Skye Jackson '21, Isabelle Bechtel '20, and Debby Lee '21, raced against 15 other entries and the Episcopal junior four was seeded 9th heading into the race. In the morning heat, the junior put together their best race of the season. With the top two crews to advance into the grand finals, Episcopal was able to hold off a charging Stone Bridge crew to win their heat and earn one of the coveted middle lanes in the final. A couple of crews who experienced issues in the morning heats regained their stride in the final and Episcopal found themselves in a battle for the 3rd through 5th positions. Unable to match the sprints of Granby and West Springfield in the last 500 meters, Episcopal finished in 5th place.

The first four, Juliet Faris '19, Sidney Lewis '19, Gardiner McGuire '19, Gray Shiverick '19, and Arden Faires '19, also found success in the morning heats. Racing as the No. 6 seed, Episcopal bested the top-seeded crew from West Springfield by nine seconds in the heat. This performance was also the best race for this boat to date. In the other two heats, many of the qualifying crews were able to cross the finish line without sprinting - saving some energy for the finals. For the afternoon final, the Maroon knew they needed another gear to compete with the other finalists. At the start, the crosswind and a long pause between the pooling of the boats and the command to start turned the boat astray. A major course correction was needed which allowed the field to jump out to an early lead. Playing catch up is never easy - even harder in the grand final of the state championship. The four fought to narrow the gap and was able to better their morning time by seven seconds and finished in 6th place in the final, out of a field of 18 boats.
