JV girls narrowly defeat NCS

The JV girls lacrosse team notched its most impressive win of the season on Tuesday against a quick and determined National Cathedral School team.
The girls put forth a tremendous team effort with strong play on both ends of the field. With momentum swinging back and forth throughout the game, the girls took an early lead only to see NCS tie the score at 3-3 at half-time. Episcopal then took an early lead in the second half and held off a relentless NCS attack to end the game with a 6-5 victory.

The JV girls showed better patience and poise on the offensive half of the field. Led by Nina Thompson ’22 and her three goal performance, the offense unveiled a more deliberate cutting offense to battle NCS’s pressure defense. Joining Thompson in the scoring column with one goal apiece were Hadley Applegate ’22, Isabel Schneider ’21, and Catherine MacKinnon ’21. Sophomore Maggie Hulkower ’21 worked especially hard supporting the team’s transition game from defense to offense and added an assist as well.

A key to the team’s success was exceptional hustle by the team in the middle of the field either to transition the ball to offense or to pressure NCS as they tried to clear the ball from their defensive end. Caroline Schmidt ’21, Caroline Ulrich ’21, Sophie Broll ’22, Charlotte Breckenridge ’21, Applegate, Isabel Schneider ’22, Gigi Friedman ’21, and Lucy Schmactenberger ’21 added terrific energy and determination to the transition game. Applegate earned three draw controls, and MacKinnon and Sophie Broll ’22 added one draw control apiece.

Ultimately the victory was a result of an outstanding defensive effort. The girls played their best team defense of the season by far and did an exceptional job helping their teammates when the opposition attempted to drive to goal with the ball. This strong defensive showing was led by Maggie Mattox ’21, Sunny Miller ’21, Jane Durden ’21, and Tallie Steiner ’21 who all worked incredibly hard to support the impressive play of Liza Ryan ‘20 in the goal. Her 12-save performance was also one of her very best of the year.
