Girls crew competes in Walter Mess Regatta

The team returned to the Occoquan River on a sunny Saturday.
After ten days on the water and four days of rowing all eight, the novice squad ventured to the starting line for their debut race. This crew left the dock in the capable hands of coxswain Sophie Novitsky '21 and approached the race with excitement and optimism. As the crew entered the final 250 meters, a jumped slide (when a seat becomes dislodged from the tracks) caused the boat to drift towards port. This allowed Wakefield to sneak up and snatch third place from Episcopal by a narrow margin of 0.4 seconds.

The first varsity four raced in a heat of six boats and pushed the stroke rating from the beginning of the race, moving out to an early lead. At the midway point of the race, the four had generated an open-water margin (more than 1 boat length) and continued to build on that lead during the last 500 meters. This crew won their heat and qualified for the final by finishing 12 and 15 seconds ahead of the two and third place boats from South County and Langley, respectively. Due to a scheduling conflict, the four was not able to compete in the final.
