Girls tennis conquers Holton-Arms

The competition was fierce and the girls showed great resilience by coming up with a big win, 5-3.
It was a hard-earned victory and the match came down to the wire, ending in an epic two-hour match by Nora Huffines ’20.

The top two singles players Gracie Hughes ’19 at number one and Lilly Schmactenberger ’19 at number two lead the team with an 8-2 victory and an 8-1 victory respectively. As two of the captains on the team, they both showed great leadership on the court. Hughes calmly and steadily chipped away at her opponent to pull out a significant win. Schamctenberger swiftly and deftly destroyed her opponent finishing her match first. The other two captains, Lily Dolan ’20 and Huffines also showed great leadership dealing with challenging opponents. Dolan at #3 singles lost a grueling match 8-1. Huffines at #4 singles lost in a tie break 8-8, T 4-7 after a grueling two-hour match. Both played with great courage.

Catherine Clark ’21 playing with Lucy Williams (20), at number one doubles lost 5-8. Early on in the match, they got behind 1-5, and they tried hard to pull out the win but fell short. Eve Mazlish ’21 and Lucy Peacock ‘21 the number two doubles also started slow and got down early in the set. However, they began to work together better and they managed to pull out the win 8-4. The third doubles made up Belle Broll ’21 and freshman Lilja Kjaernested ’22 came together for a solid victory 8-5. The final match was an exhibition match with Cooper Red ’20 and Schuyler Moore ’21 who dominated the play and easily won 8-0. This was a very satisfying win for Episcopal High School over Holton Arms, a tough competitor.
