Girls crew competes in season opener with junior four

The girls crew team opened the season at the Regional Park Regatta on Saturday. The junior four was the only boat to race this weekend. The novice team was scheduled to race, but due to some bad weather earlier in the season, it was determined that practicing would be more beneficial for this crew’s development.
The junior four lined up against three other teams (West Springfield, Fairfax, and Granby) with the goal of focusing on their technique and maintaining a manageable stroke rating for this early season race. At the midpoint of the race (750 meters), West Springfield, Granby, and Episcopal had a comfortable lead over Fairfax. While trying to keep pace with the lead boats in the closing strokes, the crosswind caused the boat to fall off to the starboard side and the junior four found it hard to maintain the gap with the top two boats. At the finish line, the junior four placed third, trailing West Springfield by 13 seconds and Granby by 8 seconds. They were able to best Fairfax by 35 seconds. Junior four: Reid Jamieson ‘20, Arabella Dixon ‘21, Skye Jackson ‘21, Isabelle Bechtel ‘20, and Debby Lee ‘21.
