Winter Athletes Celebrated During Banquet

The winter athletic season at Episcopal was highlighted by a number of both team and individual records.
The 2018-2019 girls’ varsity climbing team had a historic year, winning its first WAICL Team title. Senior Gracie Guest led the way for The Maroon with a runner-up finish in individual scoring, and an inspired team took the title by just five points after senior captain Mei Kuo was forced to withdraw due to an injury. Fellow seniors Barrett Carney and Juliet Faris turned in championship performances to clinch the victory along with teammates Arden Faires and Jane Owen.

The girls’ varsity basketball team enjoyed considerable success this season. At 14-11 overall, the team competed for the ISL-AA division tournament championship against Georgetown Visitation. Seeded #6 in the tournament, the Maroon followed up a dramatic two-point upset over #3 seeded Bullis in the quarterfinals with a huge win over regular-season ISL-AA division co-champion Sidwell in the semifinals. The team went into the VISAA Tournament seeded #7 and, after a first-round victory, fell in the quarterfinals to the higher seeded opponent.

At 16-9 overall, the boys’ varsity basketball team battled through a number of injuries to finish strong. The squad was edged out of an IAC tournament title by just six points when it took on St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes for the fourth time this season in the championship game. The Maroon ended the season with a remarkable run to the VISAA Championship final. As the #5 seeded team, The Maroon went through to the semifinal, where they matched up against a #1 seeded Paul VI. The team saved its best performance for last, defeating the #1 seed and ultimately lost a close battle in the championship final.

The wrestling team’s season was highlighted by strong individual performances and exciting team victories. Senior leader and IAC champion, Will Smith ’19 claimed his first individual state title and the first for Episcopal in wrestling since 2011. Smith led his team to some historic team highlights, including a memorable night in Bocock Wrestling Cage with an enthusiastic crowd pushing the team to defeat Georgetown Prep and an undefeated record in the Alexandria City Championship tournament.

Both varsity squash teams had a strong comeback after a 4-5 loss to Woodberry Forest in Orange, turning the tables in Goodman Squash Courts, taking the victory 5-4, and retaining the Amos-Willett Trophy in dramatic fashion. The girls’ varsity squash team had an 8-6 season and finished as the runner-up in both the Mid-Atlantic Squash Tournament and EHS Invitational.

The girls’ and boys’ indoor track and field teams put in some significant time on Cathcart Track in Flippin Fieldhouse, and it paid off at the state championship meet on St. Christopher’s track in Richmond, Va.. The girls 4x800-meter team of Alli Boehm ’20, Claire Boehm ’20, Liza Gregory ’21, and Regan Simmons ’21 reclaimed their state title in dominant fashion. The boys 4x200-meter team also clinched the state title, with outstanding legs from Jamall Mensah ’20, Dante Jackson ’21, Aaron Lindsey ’21, and Baisama Kamara ’19. Top individual honors went to Jamall Mensah’s third-place finish in the 55-meter dash, while Nina Moore ’20 and Alli Boehm’s ’20 earned runner-up and all-state distinction in the 55-meter and 1000-meter events.
