Varsity LAX opens with narrow loss

The girls Varsity lacrosse season is underway after two strong weeks of competition, practice, travel and team time! The team spent five days in Mesquite, Nevada as part of Trilogy Lacrosse’s spring training program. Despite a run-in with the stomach bug, the team had an incredibly successful week filled with lots of practice, three scrimmages against strong New England opponents, and a fun day long team trip to Zion National Park. The team returned to Alexandria for three days of on campus early return before opening the season last week with important state games against Paul VI and Collegiate.
The team opened their season in the Hummel Bowl on Monday against strong VISAA competitor Paul VI. The game was a battle from the start as the team exchanged goals throughout both halfs with neither team ever gaining a commanding lead over the other. Paul VI is fast, feisty and aggressive, but the Maroon controlled the pace of the game early with their strong transition game, re-defending ride, presence on settled defense, and possession on attack. It was truly a team effort, and it was exciting to see the hard work of the previous week show up in such form on the field. Down one goal with about a minute to play, the Maroon set up for one last look at the cage to send the game to overtime, but a great defensive block by Paul VI stopped the shot short. Despite a heartbreaking final score 8-9, the Maroon walked away proud of the heart and hustle they left on the field and ready to get back to work the next day.
