EHS Choir Performs at Historic British Sites

The EHS Choir recently completed a weeklong performance tour of England highlighted by stops at Canterbury Cathedral, the University of Cambridge, and Winchester Cathedral.
At Canterbury, the group of 34 students rehearsed under the massive oak ceiling of the adjacent Chapter House, then performed on the cathedral’s altar steps. Writing in the choir’s blog, Gray Shiverick ’19 said, “I could feel the resonance of history in the [Chapter House] walls, and in the cathedral that history was electrified by our music.”

At Cambridge, the Episcopal students performed at evensong with the Selwyn College Choir. Earlier in the day, Sarah MacDonald, Selwyn’s choir director and a noted organist and conductor, led the group in a workshop. Wrote Kyndall Donalson ’19 and Christian Hudspeth ’19: “Teaching new British music vocabulary while acknowledging the flaws of American pronunciation, MacDonald inspired us to work diligently with our music, and taught us to have the confidence to sing out while making productive changes.”

When not performing, the students visited such sites as Windsor Castle, 10 Downing Street, and Trafalgar Square.

The choir trip was one of several for EHS students during spring break. As part of an exchange program with a school in Austria, nine students are spending about 10 days in Vienna, attending a local school, touring the city and cultural sites, and staying with host families.
