Varsity Basketball Wins in Overtime

The Maroon got off to a slow and sluggish start after a two hour bus ride to Richmond and the hosts sprinted out to an early 13-9 lead.
In the second quarter, Maya Thompson '20 dished out several critical assists while finishing tough interior layups while teammate Lucy Dixon '21 was a beast on the defensive glass. Hannah Boone '22 stepped up in multiple facets of the game, scoring off reverse pivots in the paint and pulling down rebounds in crucial moments. At the half, EHS trailed 21-19.

Episcopal used the break to make defensive adjustments and talk about what they were missing offensively. In the third stanza, Haley Sabol '20 used her versatility to hit two perimeter jumpers and a huge three-pointer to give EHS a slight lead. Thompson's free throw shooting helped pace the Maroon, and Nora Huffines '20 used her basketball IQ to shut down the opposing guards. Down two with 21 seconds remaining, Sabol received a pass from Gerow and sunk a tough lefty layup against a 6-2 Gator forward, tying up the game and sending the bench into a frenzy. At the end of regulation, the two teams found themselves deadlocked in a 46-46 tie.

Despite the fact that Thompson and Sabol fouled out, the overtime period was marked by incredible intelligence, poise, and resilience. With two minutes remaining, senior captain Mary Ives Giblin '19 fed Gerow for a perfect baseline jumper. Moments later, Huffines set a tough screen for Boone who sank a lefty layup to give the squad the lead. The x-factor of the overtime period, though, was arguably Dixonthe sophomore nabbed two critical rebounds and went a perfect 4-4 from the line down the stretch to help solidify 54-50 the win for the Maroon.
