Maroon Defeats Holy Child

The varsity girls basketball squad suited up against divisional opponent Holy Child, a team they have not beaten since the 20013-14 season.
In the opening moments, Episcopal dug in defensively and held the typically ravenous Tigers scoreless for the first three and a half minutes of play. On offense, the team rallied behind fundamental layups and ball movement, and a Mary Ives Giblin '19 steal and layup at the 3:30 mark established a four point lead. Intelligent drives by Haley Sabol '20 and Lucy Dixon '21 helped further extend that margin, but Holy Child managed to tie the score by the end of the second stanza.

The third quarter was marked with incredible defensive efforts on both ends, as the teams combined for a total of two field goals. Sabol's solid free throw shooting helped give the Maroon a slight 27-24 edge and set the stage for an exciting final eight minutes of play. EHS looked slightly weary from the intensity of the game, and the Tigers used it as an opportunity to pounce. The visitors hit some big time shots and grabbed a four point lead with five minutes remaining, but EHS continued to fight. Down two with the ball underneath,  Episcopal executed an out of bounds play perfectly, and Dymin Gerow '20 hit Sabol for a nothing-but-net trifecta with 58 seconds remaining. After two incredibly intelligent defensive possessions, Episcopal was still up one with 3.8 remaining. That's when Maya Thompson '20 hit Gerow in stride with a laser of a pass, leading to an and-one play for her classmate. As time dwindled down, the Episcopal bench erupted in celebration over the 42-37 victory.
