Varsity Bball Struggles in First Game of 2019

The squad tipped off its 2019 season by traveling to Warrenton, Va., for a contest against the VISAA Division II state runners-up from the Highland School.
It took some time for the team to find its rhythm after the long bus ride, but they were finally able to use defense to create offensive opportunities. That defensive charge was led by Dymin Gerow '20, who registered eight steals in the contest, and Haley Sabol '20, who solidified the interior of the defense with her tenacious rebounding. Despite the team's efforts, they still found themselves behind 25-17 at the half.

Highland came out firing in the third stanza, and the Maroon had a difficult time finding the bottom of the net. After the Hawks built a commanding 40-24 lead, EHS had to refocus for one final push in the final quarter. Lucy Dixon '21 accepted this challenge with vigor and became a maniac on the defensive end. Maya Thompson '20 and Gerow also registered a couple of crucial buckets as the Maroon outscored their opponent 18-11. It was too little, too late, however; forced to foul in the closing minutes, Highland was able to secure the 51-42 victory.
