Holiday Music Fills the Air

Episcopal entered assessment week following a string of holiday-themed musical performances by students and other members of the community.

These performances gave the School the perfect opportunity to celebrate the season together through shared traditions full of holiday cheer.

On Wednesday, December 5, 2018, the concert choir traveled to St. John’s Episcopal Church on Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., to perform a medley of holiday songs in memory of former President George H.W. Bush. The concert, performed on the day of President Bush’s memorial service in the capital, began with a prayer paying tribute to the president. The choir then sang a series of spirituals before transitioning into holiday songs.

St. John’s Church, a historic Episcopal church located on Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., was formed in 1815. The church has been attended by every President of the United States since James Madison and is known as the “Church of the Presidents.” Photos from the performance can be viewed on our Maroon & Black Flickr account.

The annual Orchestra Holiday Concert, held on December 11, featured holiday music performed by the orchestra and the percussion ensemble as well as Christmas stories from different cultures read by members of the community. Such notable characters as St. Nick, Krampus, and the Peanuts gang all earned mention, and a special appearance was made by The Grinch, who stopped by the performance to hand out candy -- well, TBH he just threw it everywhere -- and pose for pictures with students. The concert can be viewed on LocalLive and YouTube, and photos are available on Flickr.

The 2018 Lessons and Carols vespers service, one of Episcopal’s longest-standing holiday traditions, was held on Friday, December 15. The entire community gathered in Callaway Chapel for the evening service, which was highlighted by performances from the EHS Concert Choir as well as the combined Episcopal and Virginia Theological Seminary children’s choir. The service, in its entirety, is available on LocalLive and YouTube, and photos are available on Flickr.
