Boys Win Game 1 of Sleepy Thompson Tournament

The boys varsity basketball team participated in the 63rd Annual Sleepy Thompson Tournament.
Traditionally, this has been a very strong field of teams from Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Episcopal earned their ninth Sleepy Thompson Championship in 2017, and this was the team’s fifth title in this tournament since 2009. After defeating the host school, St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School, in 2017, the team knew it would be a difficult three days of basketball. The Maroon were not able to capture the championship trophy this year, but the team was able to play in the championship game for the eighth time since 2006.

In game one of the Sleepy Thompson Tournament, EHS faced Bishop Sullivan Catholic from Norfolk, Va. Bishop Sullivan has two Division I signees on their team, and both of these players showed their talented skill set throughout the game. The EHS defense, both man and zone, focused on taking Sullivan’s top two players out of the equation, and forcing their role players to step up to the challenge. Bishop Sullivan struggled in the first half to make shots, in part because of Episcopal’s stingy defense, and the Maroon took control of the momentum in the opening two quarters, securing a 37-21 lead at the intermission.

Episcopal hit a wall in the third quarter, allowing Bishop Sullivan to trim the lead by six points heading in to the final quarter of play. Episcopal played very well during the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 22 points. All healthy members of the team saw some action in the final eight minutes of the game, and the Maroon defeated Bishop Sullivan in the opening round of the tournament by a final margin of 69-50.
