Maroon Defeats Panthers

The girls varsity basketball faced Potomac School on their home turf.
The tenacious Panthers fed off the home-court advantage and jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the opening eight minutes. After taking a collective deep breath to refocus, the Maroon responded with a stellar second quarter. outscoring their opponent 17-8. Haley Sabol '20 and Maya Thompson '20 were dominant forces on the interior of the defense, ripping down boards and forcing Potomac into multiple bad decisions (the two would go on to record double-doubles with points and rebounds!). At the half, Episcopal held on to a meager 22-21 lead.
 
Refusing to back down, the Panthers showcased their offensive firepower in the third quarter by netting three three-pointers to chase EHS out of their zone. The squad called a quick timeout to regroup after going down 10 with four minutes left in the third, and that timeout proved to be the turning point in the game. Hannah Boone '22 showed tremendous maturity and inspired the rest of the team with her grit and toughness. Not only did she make key defensive adjustments to eliminate Potomac's scoring opportunities, but she also recorded a career high of nine points—including an amazing reverse layup on an and-1 play! Dymin Gerow '20 also stepped up on the defensive end, holding one of the best point guards in the league to two field goals the rest of the way, forcing two offensive fouls, and ultimately swinging the momentum in favor of the Maroon. A scoring barrage at the end of the game propelled Episcopal ahead of the Panters in the final stanza, and they finished the game on the winning end of a 52-49 score.
