Episcopal and Woodberry Alumni Return to Charleston for 20th Annual Golf Competition

The Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Charleston, S.C., played host to the 20th Annual Alumni Challenge Cup competition between EHS and WFS on September 20-22, 2018.
Less than one week before the event, Hurricane Florence made landfall north of Charleston, in Wilmington, N.C., threatening to severely disrupt—or even cancel—the competition. Fortunately, the hurricane did no harm to the Charleston area, and almost all enlisted alumni from both schools were able to make the trip.

Yeamans Hall has been the host venue for several of the Alumni Challenge Cup golf tournaments, but never has she played so beautifully. The recently-restored Bermuda greens were virtually perfect, the fairways lush, and the weather cooperated all three days. The event kicked off with a cocktail party at the Yeamans Hall clubhouse, where participants were greeted with special 20th anniversary, custom-made Stitch golf bags, head covers, and a custom belt for each of the 68 competitors.

Unfortunately for the Maroon, their three-year winning streak came to an end. The Tigers posted strong results from the first day in fourball and foursomes, and enjoyed a comfortable 22.5 – 11.5 lead going into singles on Saturday. The Maroon needed to earn 22.5 points to retain the Cup, which was a tall order out of 34 matches, despite the singles competition being where EHS has historically been strong. All 34 matches were well-fought, and the teams split 17 – 17, giving Woodberry the win, 39.5 – 28.5.
