Slam Dunk: Boys Varsity Basketball Defeats Yorktown

A Friday night home-opener makes for a great evening in the EHS community—especially when it ends in victory.
The first quarter saw smothering full-court defense from the Maroon, and although our offense was not very sharp, the team held a 13-4 advantage after the first eight minutes of the game. After feeding off the energy of the crowd, and the excitement of the first home game, it felt as though the team hit a wall in the second quarter. As the coaching staff worked on different lineups, and the Maroon players endured early foul trouble, it was difficult to find a comfortable pace of play in the second period. Yorktown gained control of the game, and the score at the intermission was EHS 27, Yorktown 22.

The team played more inspiring basketball in the third quarter, and the offense really began to click, particularly in transition. The coaching staff was particularly pleased with the commitment to defense, and keeping the Yorktown back-court out of the paint where they made plays for themselves, or threw passes back out for three-point attempts. The Maroon won the third quarter 24-13, and they held a 16-point advantage heading in to the final eight minutes of the game.

The final period was a bit of a grind for both teams, and it seemed like there was a lid on the baskets on both ends of the floor. Over the first seven minutes of the period Yorktown only scored 4 points and despite knocking down a late three-point shot as their last basket of the game, the Maroon's defensive effort was outstanding in the final period. EHS was able to play everyone in uniform for the second straight game, and the result was not only a fourth quarter win on the scoreboard, but an overall team victory to bring Episcopal to 2-0 to begin the season.
