Varsity Basketball Crushes Georgetown Day

After just eight true practice sessions as a team, boys varsity basketball traveled to Washington, D.C., to face the Georgetown Day School Hoppers, a member of the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference—and a team that played quite well against the Maroon one year ago.
The first quarter was a toe-to-toe battle with both teams trying to find an early season rhythm. Led by seniors Xavier Johnson '19 and Asa Shannon '19, Episcopal began to force our pace of play on GDS, and eventually took a 19-13 lead at the end of the first period. The Maroon found their stride in the second period, outscoring their opponents 30-12. It was a complete effort by the team, and we executed on both ends of the floor. At the half, EHS led the home team by a score of 49-25.

Despite the large halftime deficit, GDS played hard in the third period, and it forced the Maroon to focus on their defensive rotations in both man and zone. The result was a renewed effort and intensity on defense, and this held the Hoopers to a game-low 11 points in the third quarter. Episcopal continued their hot-shooting from the perimeter, and they increased their lead to 75-36. As the start of the fourth quarter, the result of the game was no longer in doubt, but the Maroon were able to focus on different lineups, and our half-court zone defense. All 12 active and healthy players for the team saw significant time in the final period, and we learned a great deal on what we need to work on moving forward. As the final buzzer sounded, EHS won the game by a final score of 96-53.
