"Bubba Girl" Earns Most VTA Honors

EHS troupe earns seven overall awards, and an additional three honors for individual performances, at VTA competition.
On the last weekend in October, students in Episcopal’s drama program walked away from the annual Virginia Theatre Association competition in Norfolk with three individual honors and seven awards for the group and play, more awards than any other school production for their performance of “Dreaming of Bubba Girl,” an original play scripted by drama teacher Bill Patti (“with some thematic help from the students”).

The overall production earned Honorable Mention as one of the top 14 shows. Competing against 56 other schools, the group also won:
  • Best Actor - Bay Cohen (One of only 12 Awards)
  • All-State Cast - Mark Berry and Eli Wilcox (24 Total Awards)
  • Best Ensemble (3 Awards)
  • Best Presentation of an Original Play (13 New Plays eligible, 2 Awards)
  • Best New Play (13 New Plays eligible, 2 Awards)
  • Best Costumes (3 Awards)
  • Best Technical Merit (3 Awards)
  • Best Direction (3 Awards)
"The cast poured their heart and soul into this production,” Patti said. “They held a captive audience in the room, and the judges raved. As one said in our adjudication sheet, 'Your joy for the piece really shined through.'"
