Episcopal Community Begins 2018-19 School Year

The summer drew to an intermittent close as students staggered their arrival on campus, starting with the varsity football team on Saturday, August 18.
A week later, they were followed by the rest of the School’s preseason athletes, as well as the senior class and student leaders who returned early for a week of leadership training. International students returned on Sunday, September 2, for international student orientation, and were joined by the remainder of their classmates the next day. The campus was fully ready for the start of school once all new and returning students arrived for registration the following day.

A welcome assembly in Callaway Chapel kicked off the school year, and the day sped past as students attended meetings with grade deans, orientation games, a reception with the Office of Community & Equity, the Student Life Fair, seated dinner with advisories, a Vespers service, and dorm activities. The following day began after breakfast with a special Chapel service followed by a presentation from the Honor Committee and the all-student signing of the Honor Code. Students then attended a session introducing major school rules, an introduction to afternoon options, classroom tours from Monitors, a college counseling meeting for seniors, and more. As thunderstorms swept through Alexandria, the dinnertime cookout on Trask Terrace was moved indoors to Laird Dining Hall, but the festivities went undeterred.

Wednesday, September 5, was the first day of school with the new schedule that was created out of last winter’s Project SNZ. Students attended class in the morning and participated in service projects with their advisories in the afternoon.

The first weekend of school is usually a closed weekend and features the longstanding tradition of dorm games. This year, the Berkeley-Evans joint team won first place; Hoxton-Harrison came in second, followed by Hummel-Anderson in third, and McGuire-Dalrymple in fourth. Students showed their spirit by modifying their dorm T-shirts and cheering on their friends and roommates. Competitions were inspired by all areas of student life, from fastest time playing a musical scale to tug-of-war to Latin translation.
