Catherine B. Gomez-Goodnow

Departments and Positions:
• Spanish Teacher
Biography:
Catherine grew up in a bilingual family with both Mexican and anglo roots, speaking both Spanish and English. She was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and was raised in Latin America as well as Washington DC, as her father was a career Foreign Service Officer, hence the family traveled extensively. His job as well as his heritage provided Catherine with a multitude of culturally rich experiences which greatly influenced her formation.

Along with her husband Peter, Catherine has been a member of the faculty at Episcopal High School since 1997. Over the course of her many years of teaching, she has been afforded the opportunity to travel to various Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain, the Dominican Republic, Chile and most recently, Cuba. These experiences have greatly enriched her curriculum and allowed her to share a variety of first-hand authentic experiences in the target culture with her students. Catherine served for several years as chaperone on the Spain Program in Segovia. Since 2011 she has served as coordinator for the school’s exchange program with Colegio Irlandesas in Seville, Spain. In addition, four years ago, Catherine initiated an exchange program with Villa Maria Academy in Santiago, Chile.

Catherine’s travel experiences have also included participation in several school-sponsored service trips to the Dominican Republic, through Outreach360, located in the small city of Monte Cristi near the Haitian border. Every year during spring break, volunteers from innumerable high schools and colleges go into local schools in this underserved community and teach English in the classroom, as well as create enrichment activities for after school programs.

In addition to her classes, Catherine is a member of the Evans Dorm team.
