Stefanie Smith

Biography:
Stefanie joined the Episcopal faculty in 2014 after four years practicing law, and continued her practice for Ekstrand & Ekstrand, LLP based in Durham, N.C., until assuming the position of General Counsel at EHS in 2021. Stefanie's legal practice focused on representing clients in education law, civil litigation, employment law, contract negotiations, sports law, corporate litigation, and criminal law. She has significant experience in all phases of litigation as well as serving as outside in-house counsel.

She earned her B.A. in history and political science from Duke University and her J.D. from Georgetown Law. At Duke, Stefanie was a varsity letter winner and two-time captain of the women’s lacrosse team. Following graduation, Duke established an award in her name, given each year to the women’s lacrosse player who “best exemplifies the qualities of a great leader.”

Stefanie’s boarding school life began when she attended St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H., where she received the Loomis Medal for top female athlete.

In addition to her legal work for EHS, Stefanie teaches two courses: Introduction to Constitutional Law and Legal Principles and Trial Advocacy. She also serves as the assistant coach for girls’ varsity lacrosse. Stefanie lives on campus with her husband Stephen, daughter Savannah Jane, and sons Sullivan John, Sterling Sparks, and Sawyer Shaughnessy.
