Rick re-established the German program at Episcopal after its seven-year hiatus. In 2001, Rick spent three months at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and was affiliated with their German Department as a school teacher fellow. Rick taught German at Emory University during the summer of 2004 and 2005; in 2005 he taught in Emory's program in Vienna, Austria. He was the lead teacher for the Commonwealth of Virginia Governor’s German Academy in Richmond in the summer of 2006. Since 2008, Rick has participated in four international teacher seminars at the Goethe Institute in Berlin.

Since the summer of 2007, Rick has pitched and played right field in the Halifax County (Va.) Old Timer’s Baseball League. He was selected as “Rookie of the Year” in that league in 2007. He and his wife Elsabe, have two sons, Cobb ’04 and Tommy ’16, and a daughter, Ina ’06. Rick lives on campus with his family.
