Four members of the Varsity wrestling team competed in the IAC championships hosted by Landon. Missing several starters for a variety of medical issues, the focus of the day was on continued growth as wrestlers and competitors. Viewed through that lens, the team had a good day as two out of the four wrestlers earned medals in their weight classes. Placing for the Maroon were William Smith ‘19 (3rd at 160) and Alexander Block ‘17 (2nd at 138). In addition to earning trip to the finals for the 2nd year in a row, Alexander also earned all-IAC honors as he was one of three wrestlers voted to an “at-large” spot on the all-league team.
Jay Kim ‘19 put together a strong first period in his opening round bout, wrestling his opponent to 0-0 draw as he successfully countered several scoring attempts.
Jack Joyce ‘17 went 1-2 on the day. His victory was a dominating bout over a SSSA wrestler that ended in a 3rd period pin with a cross-face cradle. Both his losses came to the same wrestler from St. Albans, whom he wrestled much closer on the 2nd bout.
Smith rebounded from a tough loss in the semi-finals to win his next two matches by fall. His consolation semi-final match was a high-scoring affair in which he and his opponent traded turns before William managed to end the match with an inside cradle to a fall. His third place match was a workmanlike effort which he won by technical fall.
Block's win in the semi-finals was one of more even match-ups of the day. After a 0-0 first period, he rode his opponent the entire 2nd period but could not seem to turn him. Taking down in the third period, he escaped to go up 1-0 with about a minute left. A stall call tied the match in the final seconds, but Block managed to counter a throw attempt at the edge of the mat to win a 3-1 decision. Please join me in congratulating Alexander on his "all-IAC" honors.
