This One's For the Girls

Over its 12 years of existence, the Seminary Hill Cup has become a cherished tradition as it celebrates both the community power of a healthy rivalry and the sisterhood built out of athletic competition.
The SHC pits fall varsity and junior varsity teams from Episcopal against their next-door neighbors and rivals at St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School, filling fields, courts, and courses with players and packing sidelines and stands with fans clad in gear celebrating school pride.

The 2019 Seminary Hill Cup kicked off with the annual Seminary Hill Cup Dinner on Wednesday, October 2. As the evening's featured speaker, Katharine Farrar '07 spoke passionately about her experiences as an athlete at EHS and the importance of life lessons learned through athletic participation.

This year's SHC matchups opened with a home cross country meet on October 3. Despite capturing points for the top two runners in the meet and recording several personal bests, the Maroon was ultimately edged by St. Stephen's and St. Agnes 27-29. The Cup's first day of action also saw JV tennis bested by the Saints, falling 0-7 to a talented young squad.

Undaunted by an early 0-2 deficit in overall Cup points, the Maroon entered the second day of competition with great tenacity and spirit. At the day's end, EHS captured two of five remaining points with wins in varsity tennis and varsity volleyball while the Saints recorded victories in JV soccer, volleyball, and field hockey as well as varsity field hockey and soccer.

Saints ultimately captured their 6th Cup, breaking what was a 5-5-1 deadlock in SHC titles over the past 11 years to hold a slight edge in the overall standings.
