Impressive College Choices for Class of '17

The 109 members of the Episcopal Class of 2017 will attend 70 different colleges in 27 states, with three students going overseas to Scotland.
By all reasonable measures and accounts, it was a banner year for college decisions, according to Tara Maglio, in her second year as the Director of College Counseling at EHS.

“Almost half of the class — 53 seniors — applied to college under a binding Early Decision plan and 36 (68%) were admitted,” Maglio said. “Notably, EHS students were admitted to several of the most selective colleges in the country during the Early Decision round, including Brown, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Northwestern, UPenn, the University of Chicago, and Vanderbilt.

“The good news continued in the Regular Decision round with members of the Class of 2017 receiving acceptances to Bowdoin, Middlebury, Tufts, Georgetown, Yale, and the University of Southern California — all schools with admit rates lower than 20 percent,” she added.

Among the many highlights from their college acceptances are the following:
  • Nine graduates will attend Ivy League schools;
  • 20 graduates will continue their athletic careers in college — lacrosse (6), football (6), soccer (3), track (2), basketball (1), field hockey (1), and sailing (1);
  • An impressive 58% of the class will attend one of the most selective colleges in the country (according to Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges);
  • One in three graduates will attend a public college or university;
  • 22 will attend liberal arts colleges
The average senior submitted just over six applications, a statistic below the national average. Maglio attributed this to the students' and counselors' hard work and care throughout the college process; as a result, seniors were able to make mindful and informed college decisions.

Highlights from the many merit-based scholarships accepted by Episcopal students in 2017 are the following:
  • a Washington and Lee Johnson Scholarship recipient;
  • a recipient of the $10,000 Episcopal Colleges William Randolph Hearst Service Learning Scholarship;
  • an Egleston Scholar at Columbia University (an honors program that includes a $10,000 stipend for research endeavors);
  • a recipient of the Congress-Bundestag Scholarship, which is awarded annually to only 100 students in the United States and allows them to spend one year studying in Germany; and
  • a recipient of a United States Naval Academy Foundation Scholarship (a $7,000 scholarship to complete a PG year prior to entering the Naval Academy).
“While we’re proud of the students whose college choices are particularly noteworthy, we’re every bit as pleased with the paths chosen by all of our graduates,” Maglio said. “Our job isn’t simply to get the students into the most impressive schools. It’s to ensure all our students find the best schools that are the best fit for who they are, what they want from their undergraduate experience, and where they want their ambitions to take them.”
