Why did you choose to attend EHS?
In my opinion, Episcopal is one of the elite boarding
schools in the country. The long-standing traditions and the D.C. area made for
an easy decision.
Tell us about your most recent visit to Episcopal.
Betsy and I came back in June for my 15th Reunion. It’s only
been a couple years since I was there last, but I was amazed by all the work
taking place on campus. The improvements are great for the School. Every corner
I turned was more exciting than the last. We wanted to bring our three boys
with us, but decided it would be better to bring them in the fall for a
football/ soccer weekend.
What is your favorite EHS memory?
My most treasured memories from my time are my friendships,
hands down. We all became family throughout our years and basically raised each
other. My friendships from EHS are still my best today. I would not trade the
experience for anything.
Do you have a favorite lesson you learned at EHS?
I have a lot of great memories and lessons from EHS, but
Coach Castle provided the most. He taught me confidence, patience, and drive on
the wrestling mat. Off the mat, he taught me to understand and appreciate that life
is bigger than any one moment or circumstance and that all things are possible
with the right attitude.
How did your EHS experience impact your life?
EHS shaped my life. I believe that Episcopal made me who I
am. The independence, the lessons learned, and the obstacles that were overcome
all gave me perspective on how to live my life with my family, my work, and my
faith.
Tell us something we probably don't know about you.
I tortured my roommate at EHS with a bugle horn alarm clock.
I gave him one opportunity to knock it out of a window our sophomore year or
else it was going to make it to graduation – he missed. I later sent it in a
care package to him and his wife in the Peace Corps.
What's your philanthropic philosophy?
My philanthropic philosophy has formed over the years
through trial and error.
I have learned to say no to everyone on the first call. I
have also learned to give only where my heart and my passion lie.
