Why did you decide to attend a boarding school?
At first, I was drawn in by the allure of boarding school as I imagined it would be: sleepovers every night, no parents, and virtually unlimited independence. However, as I looked deeper into the idea, I discovered boarding school was not only a place that would be really fun - even if a couple of my original ideas turned out to be a bit exaggerated; it was somewhere I could really develop skills in a number of areas whether it was art, music, athletics, or academics. All while surrounded by an expert faculty in an environment that could best prepare me for the future. So, I applied!
Why did you choose to attend EHS?
I originally applied here because I had ties to the School. My mom grew up in Alexandria, and my cousin graduated with the class of '07. As I learned more and more about EHS, I discovered an amazing legacy of academics and state champion sport teams. EHS looked perfect on paper, but what really was the deciding factor was my visit. The campus was beautiful; the students were friendly; the faculty was welcoming; and even though it was only my first visit, I left completely enamored.
How has EHS impacted your life?
EHS has offered me more opportunities for growth than anywhere else I could imagine. It allows me to develop my skills and interests on a whole new level. I am taking AP photography this year, and I just spent three weeks in France. EHS has taught me to fend for myself while still being able to count on the expertise of my peers and teachers. I feel wholly prepared for whatever the future might throw at me, which is a confidence I owe completely to EHS!
How has your decision to attend boarding school affected your relationships with your parents, Brett, and Woody?
My parents are obviously sad that I can’t be home with them all the time, but I think more than that, they are proud of everything I have accomplished and applaud the confidence and independence I have developed here. Being apart made us even closer, if anything. Additionally, an entirely new component of thankfulness has entered our relationship. It makes you feel much more appreciative of your mom once you’re doing your own laundry! Having my brothers here has made us much closer as well. It is very comforting to know that you have someone at school supporting you unconditionally.
What is your favorite part of daily EHS life?
I love the accessibility, whether it is to your friends, or your teachers, or a brand new state-of-the-art athletics facility. When you have a secret you’re dying to tell someone, you can just pop next door or tell your roommate on the bunk below. If you have a problem, whether it be a particularly difficult chemistry equation or you’re just missing home, there is always a teacher around to help you out or bake you a pan of brownies. You can go work out, do homework in the library, eat in the dining hall, or grill by the pond, all because it is in your backyard.
What have you learned about yourself by being a part of the EHS community?
When I was applying, I was an especially shy eighth grader with a big and slightly ambitious plan. For a while in the beginning, it seemed as though I had taken on a bit too much, I didn’t let my fears overcome my drive to succeed. I am proud to say that today I am very happy with my decision. I am a million times more confident, and I could not be more pleased with where I've ended up!
