Washington Program

Episcopal High School’s unique Washington Program provides students with exciting educational and enrichment opportunities outside of the traditional classroom.

The Wednesday Tour program augments learning in all the major academic disciplines through trips to local points of interest: e.g., museums, art galleries, churches, government agencies and non-government organizations and foreign embassies. While on tour, some students use Washington as a living laboratory, doing everything from polling people on current issues to running ecological experiments on local waterways to using the shape of government buildings to test geometric theorems.

On “enrichment” tours, students visit traditional Washington landmarks their classes may not see: e.g., the National Archives, Jefferson Memorial and the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  The “non-Wednesday” tours, part of EHS’s Cultural Connections program, include theater performances and concerts.

The program's Senior Seminar offers an opportunity for seniors in good standing to participate in various types of work and service projects in the local area. During the final three to four weeks of their senior year, participating students are excused from regular classes to work daily in the local area, in a field of particular interest to them.  Students who participate in the Senior Seminar maintain a log of their daily activities, which becomes the basis of a final paper or project, and a substantial interview with a committee of faculty members at the conclusion of the program.

In sum, the Washington Program is designed to give our students the broadest possible exposure to Washington during their time at Episcopal in ways that broaden their horizons and stimulate their academic and intellectual development.
