Purpose and Philosophy

The Senior Seminar offers the opportunity to broaden your educational experience through participation in work or service projects in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. There are numerous opportunities for independent study offered in the nation's capital and surrounding area - service organizations, legislative offices on Capitol Hill, law firms, corporations, research labs, hospitals, etc. Senior Seminar is a privilege. Each program is approved only when the applicant has persuaded the Senior Seminar Committee that the project promises results that traditional forms of instruction may not provide.

Eligibility

To qualify for the Senior Seminar internship, each student must meet the following academic standards:

A passing average in every course, the completion of which will provide ample credit for graduation
No significant drop-off in any course during the fourth marking period
Successful participation in the Senior Seminar in the discipline chosen (evaluation to be based on performance on reading and writing assignments, on-site requirements, and adherence to program deadlines)

                                       Guidelines

The seminar is a 1/2 credit academic course graded on the student's course work, the internship itself, and on the final paper and oral presentation. If an application is approved, the student continues their normal semester coursework until early in May. The grades earned at that point become final on their transcript. The student's paper should address the following topics:

Did you accomplish the goals you set for the internship?
To what extent did your reading and/or work experience modify your goals?
How relevant was the reading to your job experience?
What have you learned about yourself, the outside world, the working life?
