In 1998, John was asked by Headmaster Rob Hershey to work side by side with him as the School’s assistant head for student life, a position John held until 2005, as well as for several years in the 1980s. “The position was an opportunity to be a part of the leadership team at an exciting time at Episcopal,” John says. In that role, he oversaw all non-academic aspects of student life.

John originally joined the EHS faculty in 1969 as an English teacher. In 1974, he was appointed assistant headmaster. He left EHS briefly from 1979 to 1981 to serve as headmaster of the Adirondack Mountain School in Long Lake, N.Y. When he returned to Episcopal, John served as assistant headmaster for student life until 1986, when he assumed the duties of director of admissions.

Currently, John teaches English, advises the Honor Committee, and is part of the administrative duty team. He lives on campus with his wife, Jackie Maher. He has two grown sons, John and Pete, and three grandchildren.
