Birgit Rutledge-Riel German M.Ed. University of Virginia University of Vienna

Birgit brings over eight years of foreign language instruction experience to EHS, joining the faculty as a part-time German instructor. She received her master's degree in German and English language and literature from the University of Vienna in Austria, and went on to earn her master's degree in education from the University of Virginia.

She taught public school for one year in Fairfax County before returning to Austria for two years, where she taught grades five through 12 at Episcopal's sister school, Theresianische Akademie , in Vienna. Birgit has continued to teach German at public schools in the northern Virginia region since her return to the states. She and her husband, Peter Rutledge, have a 5-year-old daughter, Anna, and twin 1-year-old girls, Marie and Nina.
