M.Div. Virginia Theological Seminary
M.S. Catholic University
B.A. Wheaton College

After earning a bachelor’s degree in English from Wheaton College, Jen taught English and served as librarian at Hertford County High School in North Carolina for two years. She spent 10 years working in various libraries, including Eastern Mennonite University and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, before entering Virginia Theological Seminary in 2001.

From 2004 until 2006, Jen served as assistant rector and curate at St. James-the-Less Episcopal Church in Ashland, Va. There she oversaw programs for children ranging in age from infancy through college, including a campus ministry at Randolph-Macon College. She also served on a Homelessness Task Force for Ashland/Hanover County. Jen is a member of the Diocese of Virginia’s Ecumenical and Interfaith Commission, and has traveled twice to Tanzania on short-term mission trips in the last year, working for the Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Mpwapwa, a soccer buddy of hers from seminary.

In addition to her role as Episcopal’s assistant chaplain, Jen teaches theology. She lives in Alexandria with her husband, Sven vanBaars, a student at Virginia Theological Seminary.
