Rick’s decision to come to Episcopal was influenced, he says, by the strong reputation of the School and its highly successful approach to teaching foreign languages. He re-established the German program at Episcopal after its seven-year hiatus. In 2001, Rick spent three months at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and was affiliated with their German Department as a school teacher fellow. He stays up-to-date in his field by attending conferences and reading the latest professional literature. During the summer of 2005, Rick taught for the Emory University Summer Abroad Program in Vienna, Austria, and he was the lead teacher for the Commonwealth of Virginia Governor’s German Academy in Richmond in the summer of 2006.When he is not teaching or coaching JV baseball, Rick reads, swims, and watches baseball. In 2002, Rick opened an independent bookstore, Chatham Books, in an historic 1878 building in Chatham, Va. He and his wife, Elsabe, have two sons, Cobb ’04 and Thomas, and a daughter, Ina ’06. Rick serves on the Dalrymple Dorm team and lives on campus with his family. |
