English
Four credits are required in English. Students must be enrolled in English every year at EHS and must pass grammar competency tests in English 1, 2, and 3. Either an Honors or Advanced Placement English course is offered for levels 2 through 4.
Foreign Languages
Students are required to study one foreign language for three years and successfully complete at least the second level in that language. Students who have completed level two of a language in two years of study are further required to pass the third level. The final credit in that language must be earned at EHS. Students who complete this requirement in their junior year are strongly urged to take the next level of that language.
Mathematics
A minimum of three credits is required in mathematics including successful completion of trigonometry, either as part of the full-year Algebra 2 with Trigonometry course or in a one-semester course (Algebra 3 with Trigonometry). A junior is required to take a full year of math and EHS strongly encourages students to take mathematics every semester. Students have several Advanced Placement math options.
Science
Students are required to earn two credits in laboratory science, the last of which must be earned at EHS. Many colleges prefer students to have more science credits. We recommend that students be aware of these preferences while making course selections.
Social Studies
Themes in Global History 2 and United States History (or their AP or Honors equivalents) are required.
The Arts
The Arts Department has a one-credit requirement for all students entering in the ninth grade. Entering tenth and eleventh graders must earn one-half credit. All ninth graders, except those in Choir or Orchestra, must take Introduction to the Arts. Another one-half credit in the performing or applied visual arts while at EHS is required for graduation.
Computer Studies
Technology 101 is a non-credit course that all new students must take during the first three weeks of their first year at EHS.
Theology
Entering ninth or tenth graders must take Biblical Theology by the end of the tenth grade. Seniors take a one-half credit course in theology.
The following English courses can, under certain circumstances, be used for theology credit:
- Ethics and Aesthetics
- Southern Literature and Ethics
- Greek
See the Greek Language course descriptionsfor details.
Physical Education
The physical education requirement of two or three credits is met through the afternoon athletic program at EHS. Successful participation for one season in a team sport provides one-third credit. Many students participate in a team sport each season. Intramural and conditioning programs are limited to older students. The PE credit may be earned by serving as a team manager, an athletic assistant, or by participating in an injury rehabilitation program.
