Field Experiences in Environmental Science

June 20 - June 25, 2010

The hands-on Field Experiences in Environmental Science program introduces students to physical and chemical tests, as well as the biological species found, as a means of determining the environmental quality of freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. This course is field-based, with the majority of time spent outside collecting data from streams, lakes, forests, and mountains in the Washington, D.C., area and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Data analyses will be performed in the state-of-the-art Baker Science Center. These field sites offer young scientists a comparison among systems with varying degrees of human impact. Campers will present their findings to classmates and families at the conclusion of the program. Participants also will have the opportunity to visit historic sites in Washington, D.C., and enjoy some free time around campus.

Open to overnight or day (8 a.m. to 9 p.m.) students entering grades seven through nine.
