Documentary Photography

A Crash Course in Real-World Photographic Practice

July 21-28, 2011

This course provides attendees with an introduction to photographic practice. Through a series of demonstrations, slide lectures, and day trips to civil war battlefields and monuments in the Washington, D.C., area, students will develop the fundamentals of contemporary digital workflow and explore the concepts and historical precedents of the documentary photographic tradition. On-campus instruction will take place in the Ainslie Arts Center, where students will have access to Episcopal’s digital workstations and 35mm digital cameras and lenses. The workshop will culminate with an exhibition of student work in the Angie Newman Johnson Gallery; beginners are encouraged to attend. All equipment will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own digital SLR cameras.

Boarding students or extended day students (8 a.m. to 9 p.m.), entering grades eight through 10. Cost: $750 boarding, $600 extended day.
