At each visit to Anderson Pond, we record the air temperature, the weather conditions and the Secchi depth. The air temperature fluctuates depending on the season. The Secchi depth is a measure of the pond’s transparency. The Secchi depth increased in October, due to the reduction of the amount of algae in the pond and siltation from runoff. Otherwise, the depth is consistent. Anderson pond is approximately four meters deep, and the fact that the Secchi depth is only one meter deep tells us that most of the photosynthesis occurs within in the top 2 m of the pond. The bottom 2 m of the pond is an aphotic zone, dominated by cellular respiration.
